About Mount Kilimanjaro

Imagine a snow-capped mountain, south of the equator, among a massive savannah. The mighty Mount Kilimanjaro is a magnet to thousands of people who come to Tanzania every year with just one goal: to conquer Africa’s highest peak. Mount Kilimanjaro rises high above the open African plains in Tanzania to an impressive 5,895 meters (19,336 feet). The real challenge with climbing Kilimanjaro is the altitude and the rate of ascent. Reaching the ‘Roof of Africa’ is an adventure of a lifetime and a chance to view Africa from an entirely different perspective.

Climate zones

Kilimanjaro is so immense that it contains five climate zones, each about 1000m in height. From bush and grassland to dense rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and finally to the arctic zone with only rocks and ice. It’s a journey from the tropics to the arctic, all within the span of roughly a week. You don’t need to be an experienced mountain climber to reach its peak, but you need to be healthy and fit, strong-minded, and have a little bit of luck.

There are different climbing routes you can choose. The routes approach the mountain from different sides and they vary in length, difficulty, scenery, and other aspects. Marangu and Machame are the most popular. Other routes are Lemosho, Rongai, Shira, and Umbwe. The shortest routes are 5-6 days and the longest ones are 7-9 days. Enjoy the breathtaking views of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, the Rift Valley, and the Masaai Steppe during your trek.

Apart from climbing the Kilimanjaro, it is also possible to go for a hike on the Shira plateau or one of the nature trails on the lower reaches. Or you can visit the beautiful azure Challa crater lake on the mountain’s south-east slopes.
